Born in 1951 Biplab Dutta graduated with diploma in Visual Art from renowned Indian Art College Kolkata. Since 1983 he has been participating in numerous camps and solo exhibitions.  His first solo titled ‘landscape’ was held at Academy of fine Arts and it got some rave review from various artist and journalist. He found inspiration in the immediacy and openness of rustic life in his native village. His other prominent solo exhibitions include “Adieu The Youth at Indian Museum Raling, 1985, ‘Babu and My Window” at Academy of Fine Arts, 1989, “Dream in The Dark” at Lokayata, 2006.

Over the years, Biplab Dutta has moved from one medium to another with ease from Oil Painting, Water Colour, Pen and Ink to Acrylic. On his recent solo show at Lokayata, he has addressed the notion of suffering of human beings. These paintings reflect the illusion and nightmare in the dark. The works in acrylic are thick and over-layered, and this gives them more dimension and life.

Recently a solo exhibition named “Nightmare” held in Bangalore, where his vast acrylic canvases may seem like a faithful depiction of the pain and suffering of resilient ordinary men affected by the recent terrorist attack in Mumbai. His attempt to actualize his mental vision of a painting, and capture the intensity of suffering make his work more eloquent.
